Freed from debt

CoinsLast year we joined with six other churches in the town to set up the Hastings & St Leonards CAP Debt Centre. CAP stands for Christians Against Poverty and the centre was desperately needed in our town.

A recent report by the Money Advice Service, which was set up by the Government, found that 23,000 people in Hastings & St Leonards are 'over-indebted', which means they have either been three months behind with their bills within the last six months or would describe their debt levels as a 'heavy burden'. This means that around 30% of the adult population are struggling with debt.

Since the local CAP Debt Centre's official launch here at King's in June 2013, it has started to help over 70 local adults who were overwhelmed by debt. In December we celebrated seeing the first of our clients to become completely debt-free, and we're expected at least another two to be debt-free later this month. What's more, we've given out over 40 Foodbank vouchers; supplied cookers, washing machines and hoovers to families in need; taken one family on a CAP Discovery Break holiday; and given out 40 Christmas hampers via the partner churches.

We're also very excited by the fact that in our first six months, four of our clients have found faith in Jesus!

Please keep praying for the Hastings & St Leonards CAP Debt Centre and for all those struggling with debt in our communities.

If you need help to overcome debt, call 0800 328 0006, and please pass on the number to anyone else overwhelmed by debt who would like help.
