Can we change the world?

Last week I heard a lot about a guy who was given up for adoption by his parents, dropped out of college, slept on friends' floors and exchanged used Coke cans for money for food.

That guy was Steve Jobs – innovator, entrepreneur, co-founder of Apple – who sadly died on 5th October 2011 after losing his battle with pancreatic cancer.

All of the obituaries agree that Steve Jobs changed the world and one of the things that strikes me in everything I read about him is that he wanted others to believe that they could change the world too. Check out Apple’s 1998 ‘Think Different’ ad.

Do you believe you can change the world? I've been asking myself this over the last week, realising that my answer is probably, "I'd like to think so, but I doubt it." At the same time, I've been reflecting on prayer for a talk I was giving to our youth and feeling a growing 'niggle' from God that if I truly believe I can approach Him boldly, speak with Him and have Him answer my prayers, then surely I should believe that yes, actually, through the wonderful mystery of God catching us up in His sovereignty, of course I can change the world because my prayers are, as James 5 says, "powerful and effective".

Throw into the mix that I recently attended the Newfrontiers Social Action Conference (see www.jubilee-plus.org), and I'm also challenged about the difference I personally can make to others. As a good friend of mine often quotes, "To the world you may be just one person, but to one person you could be the world."

So let's get on our knees to God that we might change the world and on our feet to those in our communities that we might change Hastings.
