Creating money (part 2)

Yesterday I suggested how we can create spare cash through a money saving website, sharing BOGOF deals with friends and cutting out takeaways for a few weeks. Here are another three top tips for saving money on everyday items:

1. Supermarkets reduce a lot of their products by around 70% at about 7-8pm, e.g. hot cooked chickens are reduced to £2; a pack of sausages is 49p instead of £1.99. Many reduced items can be frozen and so will last beyond the 'sell by' date. On windy or rainy evenings, people are less inclined to go shopping so you are more likely to get the first pick of the reduced items.

  • Take a list and stick to it when doing your weekly food shop – this way you will be less tempted to buy on impulse and waste money.
  • Eat before going shopping. If you are hungry you will think every piece of food in the supermarket looks delicious and buy much more than you need! Minimise temptation.

2. Gym membership If you don't use it, lose it! Or consider putting your membership on hold for a period of time and do exercise that is free, such as running or buying a cheap fitness DVD or second-hand weights to work out at home. Save even more money by walking or cycling to work instead of catching the bus or driving.

3. Boot Sales De-clutter your garage/loft, team up with a friend and sell possessions you no longer need through the local paper, at boot-sales or on good old eBay.
