Choose life!

The very moment we made the choice to put our trust in Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, we were declared free! We were suddenly, instantly alive to the biblical worldview, and from that pivotal moment in our lives, we could start choosing to put God's truth as the plumb-line by which we interpret and understand every other experience and view that we encounter.

In the summer of 1833, the Slavery Abolition Act became law, abolishing slavery in the British Empire and meaning that millions of slaves across the British Empire were declared free for the first time. But at that moment, how many slaves took advantage of that legal freedom? Not many. For Christians, we can live in a similar way: completely free in Christ, declared righteous, now a son or daughter of the God who created all things, but living life as if we are still slaves to sin.

Galatians 5:1 says: "It is for freedom that Christ set us free." And Jesus said: "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:36) So what exactly changed when God declared freedom over us?

Firstly, our heart has changed: God has given every believer a new heart – a heart of flesh instead of a heart of stone (Ezekiel 11:19); a heart that is alive to long for God. Secondly, our position has changed: we are no longer citizens of earth, but of heaven; no longer in Adam, but in Christ, seated with Him in the heavenly places. Thirdly, our desire has changed: where once we lusted after things that do not satisfy, now we find satisfaction in God through desiring to be with Him and to be like Him; we were once slaves to the master of sin, now we live in relationship with our Father.

You may still have the same physical body and the same 'flesh' and an enemy who the Bible says would like to devour you! But, if you've accepted Jesus as your personal Saviour, the truth is that you are free!

Some Christians make the mistake of believing that a one-time choice is all it takes to follow Christ. In Scripture, we realise that what God has in store for us is much more than just life after death, but true life now! We have to train ourselves to walk with the Spirit and choose each day to think in a way that is in line with truth rather than according to our past experiences and habits. And we don't do it alone, but: "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness" (2 Peter 1:3).
