Pulling ourselves to God

Check out this profound statement by a guy called E. Stanley Jones:

"Prayer is surrender, surrender to the will of God and cooperation with that will. If I throw out a boat hook from the boat and catch hold of the shore and pull, do I pull the shore to me, or do I pull myself to the shore? Prayer is not pulling God to my will, but the aligning of my will to the will of God."

This quote has helped me see the true heart and essence of prayer. If you're anything like me, it's easy to present God with a shopping list of requests, trying desperately to pull God in line with my wants and needs. It's right, of course, to ask God for stuff, but if that's all we make it, we've missed the point by a million miles!

As well as talking to God, prayer is ultimately about getting to know God, hearing his voice, understanding his heart, his thoughts, his desires and plans, and as we're drawn towards him we're changed by him. Prayer is not pulling God to us – but rather pulling ourselves to God!

Reading: Ephesians 1:17-23
Next Prayer Meeting: Tomorrow at 7am (all welcome)
